President John Dramani Mahama made clear his intention to reconsider the privatization of Ghana’s power distribution, emphasizing the importance of boosting efficiency in the country’s energy sector.
The President disclosed his intentions at a meeting with a World Bank group at his private office in Cantonments, Accra.
He emphasized the significance of correcting systemic inefficiencies that have plagued the country’s power value chain, particularly at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
President Mahama recapped the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) project’s inception while reflecting on his time serving as Vice President under the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills.
The effort sought to increase the overall efficiency of the industry in order to establish Ghana as one of Africa’s top producers and exporters of power.
“During my time as Vice President, the late President Atta Mills initiated the Millennium Corporation Compact, designed to make Ghana the most efficient electricity producer in Africa and a hub for energy exports,” he said.
“If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, we will continue to face significant challenges across the entire power value chain,” he noted, signalling his administration’s readiness to re-engage the private sector in electricity distribution.
