The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nsoatreman Football Club (FC), in connection with the murder of the supporter of the Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC.
Police sources at the regional command confirmed to The Inquirer yesterday, that the police arrested Baffour-Awuah, also the former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations and his personal bodyguard, one Kofi Agyyemang Duah.
The deceased identified as Francis Frimpong popularly known ‘Pooley’ was allegedly stabbed to death during the ‘Day 19’ premier league encounter between the two clubs on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at the Professor Amoah Koromansah II Stadium at Nsoatre in the Sunyani West Municipality.
The sports facility, the home grounds of the Nsoatreman FC belongs to the former minister.
According to the source, the police have since sent the suspects to the stadium for some preliminary investigations and added that “we don’t actually know when they will be granted bail because investigations are on-going.”
Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko has confirmed that one of their fans has been stabbed to death following violent clashes during their Ghana Premier League Matchday 19 fixture against Nsoatreman FC.
In an official statement, the club revealed that the supporter sustained fatal injuries during the chaos and later passed away at the Sunyani Hospital.
Our Kumasi-based reporter, Emmanuel Owusu, reports that the entire Kotoko team visited the hospital, where they received the devastating news.
The match, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for Kotoko, witnessed chaotic scenes as players from both sides clashed, leading to the referee issuing four red cards. The situation spiralled out of control after the final whistle, resulting in violent confrontations between fans.
Kotoko has strongly condemned the violence and is urging the Ghana Football Association to launch an immediate investigation to ensure that those responsible face justice.
