Climate change-induced tidal waves is gradually eating away parts of the Volta Region, with devastating impact on towns like Salakope, Agavedzi, and adjoining coastal communities in especially the Ketu South Municipality.

The latest disaster, which began on February 1, this year, has heightened fears that the already fragile Keta-Havedzi-Denu-Aflao Road network could be completely wiped away.

Residents are calling for urgent action from the government to address the crisis, which has been exacerbated by climate change and rising sea levels.

In response to the devastating tidal waves in the region, the regional minister, James Gunu has declared a state of emergency, emphasising that the situation is a national security threat, and urgent action is necessary to prevent further destruction and protect residents’ lives.

Mr. James Gunu assured the affected residents that the government is committed to finding immediate and long-term solutions to the problem.

He presented relief items to over 510 victims affected by the disaster and stressed that the government attaches prominence to curbing the destruction caused by the sea.

To address the crisis, Hon James Gunu has organized the following solutions: distribution of relief items to affected residents, completion of the sea defense project to protect communities from tidal waves, and the completion of the Ghana Gas shelter project to provide housing for displaced residents.

He further proposed evacuation exercise to relocate residents from affected areas and a collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to address the disaster.

Meanwhile, experts warn that if the tidal waves persist, the coastal road would be eroded, cutting off vital transport links and leaving communities stranded.

With growing pressure from residents, environmental activists, and tourism stakeholders, the government is being urged to prioritise the completion of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project and integrate long-term climate adaptation measures to protect Ghana’s coastal communities.
